A Song For The Ages

What kind of show for kids has turmoil, jeopardy, country politics, war and a heart-warming tale all in one place? Well Avatar: The Last Airbender certainly did.

โ€œLong ago, the four nations lived together in harmony

…then everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked.

Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them,

but when the world needed him most,

he vanished.”

The story of four nations, torn apart by greed and war, and the ones destined to save them, Avatar the Last Airbender is a series which is constantly moving and evolving. Be it the introduction of the politics and propaganda in Ba Sing Se or the turmoil of an exiled prince, there’s so much sub-text and maturity within the story, making it stand out among other media aimed at younger audiences.

I think I may know an old a folk song from the Earth Kingdom, which encapsulated the showsโ€™ theme.

Now sing it with me:

“Two lovers forbidden from one another a war divides their people and a mountain divides them

apart, build a path to be together.

(Yeah, I forgot the next couples of lines but then it goes)

Secret tunnel, secret tunnel through the mountain

Secret, secret, secret, secret tunnel! Oh yeah!”

If there was ever a song from animated show that grew a bond between fans, it’s Secret Tunnel from Avatar: The Last Airbender. It has everything, whimsy, turmoil, a love story, all bound within such few little lines. I feel this is one of those it will go down in infamy among A:TLA fans to which is almost a mating call now among those same fans.
