PayPal’s actions are the latest in events between payment processors & storefronts.
In July, Steam users in certain countries discovered they could no longer use PayPal as a payment option. An update was finally added to the Steam Support page:
In early July 2025, PayPal notified Valve that their acquiring bank for payment transactions in certain currencies was immediately terminating the processing of any transactions related to Steam. This affects Steam purchases using PayPal in currencies other than EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD and USD.
We hope to offer PayPal as an option for these currencies in the future but the timeline is uncertain. We are also evaluating adding additional payment methods on Steam for the customers affected by this.
This is the latest in the friction between payment processors and digital storefronts. Recently, Mastercard forced Itch.io to deindex around twenty thousand titles marked as “Not Safe For Work” (NSFW) after a campaign against sexual content by the right-wing Australian lobby group Collective Shout.
Projects by LGBT+ artists and creators were caught in the crossfire and deindexed. While all free NSFW games to been re-indexed by the 31st of July, paid titles are still not available.
