With the Witness put down, and the saga of light verses darkness over, is it worth joining the fight in Destiny?

After a three or four-year hiatus, I jumped back into Destiny around the final month of The Final Shape expansion. During this month, I tanked through the story and all three episodes of content, and at no point did it feel like a slog. Coupled with friends, I have been re-indoctrinated into being a guardian of light again, and let me tell you, it feels awesome.
Not only have I spent probably an unhealthy amount of time playing it with friends running dungeons, raids, and exotic quests, but I’ve also re-joined an old Clan I used to run with back in the day. But the question remains: should you come back too?

Fighting The Good Fight
The state of Destiny 2 as I came back is what I would consider to be the best experience I have felt in my entire Destiny life cycle (I was there from day-one for Destiny ‘s original release), with a slew of content that was effectively brand new to me.
Firstly, The Final Shape expansion added a new subclass called prismatic. This allowed you to craft a rather unique playstyle using abilities from five of the standard subclasses (arc, solar, void, stasis, and strand), which made your classes feel more personal with the options you chose to build your class with. Along with a new subclass, The Final Shape also ended the “Light versus Dark Saga” with the ending being quite emotional. It left me with the feeling of, well, what’s next? Thankfully, I didn’t have to wait too long to find out.

A Fated Return
Edge of Fate was the next planned instalment of the Destiny story. With the witness and darkness defeated, what could possibly be next for our 10-year guardians? Enter The Edge Of Fate.
An omnipresent force in the background of all major conflicts and choices stands the Nine. They have been around since before the beginning, and are now making themselves known.
You are summoned to the planetoid of Keplar to uncover new mysteries and play with some interesting new mechanics. The story itself answers some questions while also making us ask new ones, some of which, as is Destiny’s tradition, are not answered at the end of the story. While on the planetoid you have new traversal mechanics along with items and abilities you unlock to solve puzzles and explore the mysterys, ive seen a lot extremely mixed reactions to this from the community ranging from loving it to hating it.

More Changes
One of the big changes brought with Edge of Fate is the new portal menu. It holds a range of activities from solo ops (solo only missions), to fireteam ops (these are effectively strikes and multiplayer mission types), pinnacle quests (exotic quests from the game that reward you with rare and powerful exotic gear for the first clear), and of course, crucible (which is your PvP).
Each of these activities have varying factors of modifiers to add to the mission, which will increase your score. The higher the score rank, the higher the loot will drop to increase your light level. Trust me when I say you’ll be using it a LOT to level (as of writing this is how it is, yet Bungie is addressing this and have stated they will be making changes to this)
Sadly, raids and dungeons do not drop light level-raising gear, which is somewhat irritating, but nothing that a simple run of a portal activity won’t fix. Again, this has been addressed by Bungie, and changes are due to come regarding this.

Is it worth coming back?
Personally, absolutely. Especially if you’ve missed a few years of content and catch it on sale. I’ve seen Destiny in the sales a few times in the past few months, at least on PlayStation. Even the Edge Of Fate expansion got a sale recently.
Whether you’re curious about the story’s next step or wish to join your friends in a fireteam to run dungeons or raids, Destiny 2 is still very much the looter shooter you’ve played or seen. Yet it feels the best it has in its existence.
And hey, if you are brand new to Destiny, you can play the start of the game all the way through expansions one to three (Forsaken, Shadowkeep, and Beyond Light) for free, along with all dungeons and raids within those content packs.
