When Gotham Knights was first announced, fans were both curious and cautious. A Batman game without Batman sounded bold, maybe even risky. Developed by WB Games Montréal, the game steps into uncharted territory, exploring Gotham’s dark streets after Bruce Wayne’s death. Players take control of the Bat-Family: Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood as they rise to fill the void left by the Dark Knight.

A Gotham Without Batman
Gotham Knights opens with a bold and striking premise — Batman is gone, leaving the city exposed, vulnerable, and teetering on the edge of chaos. Without the Dark Knight’s shadow looming over Gotham. Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood must step up, not just to fight crime, but to define their own roles as heroes. Each character brings a distinct personality, combat style, and emotional arc, making the story feel deeply personal while highlighting the importance of teamwork.
At its core, the game is about legacy and responsibility. How do you carry on someone else’s mission? Can Gotham survive without its legendary protector? These questions aren’t just background — they actively shape missions, side quests, and character interactions. The city itself reacts to their presence, reinforcing that every choice, every victory, and every failure matters.
By removing Batman from the equation, the game creates space to explore growth, family, and trust among the Bat-Family. It’s a story that balances action and emotional stakes, asking players to step into the shoes of heroes who must rise to the occasion — and prove that Gotham doesn’t need just one Dark Knight to survive.

Combat and Gameplay
Unlike the Arkham games, Gotham Knights leans into light RPG systems and cooperative brawler-style combat rather than pure free-flow beat-’em-up mechanics. Combat sits somewhere between a traditional brawler and an action RPG . It’s not full hack-and-slash chaos, but more deliberate and methodical than Arkham’s lightning-fast counters.
There are combos to learn, but they’re less about long button strings and more about timing, positioning, and ability synergy. Light and heavy attacks chain together, momentum abilities act as powerful finishers, and elemental effects (like cryo or incendiary damage) add strategic layers. Perfect dodges and timed strikes are especially rewarding on higher difficulties.
Players can switch between the four heroes back at HQ, choosing the right character for a given combat encounter or traversal challenge. Each hero also features customizable suits, allowing players to tweak both aesthetics and combat-focused upgrades, from enhanced gadgets to stat boosts.
Co-op play adds a further layer of depth. Coordinating takedowns, reviving each other mid-fight, and combining abilities makes encounters feel dynamic and genuinely cooperative. While the game can be played solo, swapping characters and upgrading their suits ensures every fight has variety, keeping the combat fresh and emphasizing the Bat-Family’s teamwork.

Open-World Gotham
Gotham City is once again the star of the show, sprawling and vibrant, packed with crimes to stop, hidden secrets, and challenges that reward exploration. Each neighborhood feels distinct, from neon-lit industrial zones to shadowy alleyways, giving the city a sense of scale and life beyond the main story.
Traversal is satisfying and tailored to each hero. Batgirl glides across rooftops with precision, Nightwing flips and swings through the streets with acrobatic flair, Red Hood’s gadgets and mystical leaps let him reach places others can’t, and Robin moves with stealth and agility, perfect for sneaking past enemies or scaling walls. Each character’s mobility adds a unique flavor to exploration and combat encounters.
Side missions introduce a variety of iconic villains — from Harley Quinn’s chaotic antics to Clayface’s shape-shifting traps, and Mr. Freeze’s cold, methodical schemes. Optional activities like patrols, environmental puzzles, and crime scenes encourage exploration. Meanwhile collectibles and hidden upgrades reward players who venture off the beaten path.

Visuals and Atmosphere
Gotham City is beautifully rendered — dark, moody, and brimming with tension. Rain-slicked streets, neon signage, and the ever-present shadow of crime give the city a lived-in, dangerous feel. While some players criticized performance issues at launch — particularly the 30 FPS cap on consoles — patches have improved stability and smoothed gameplay in most areas.
Cutscenes are fully voiced and cinematic, with high-quality animations that capture the personalities of the Bat-Family. They balance action and story, moving the narrative forward while giving each character emotional depth. The voice acting is solid across the board, with distinct performances that bring life to the heroes, villains, and supporting cast. Whether it’s Batgirl’s confident quips, Nightwing’s acrobatics and charm, or Red Hood’s brooding intensity, the dialogue feels natural and engaging.
Overall, the visuals and voice work combine to create a Gotham that feels alive and immersive, making exploration, combat, and story moments all the more compelling.

A Story of Growth and Teamwork
Where Gotham Knights truly shines is in its character development. Each hero is grappling with the loss of Bruce Wayne in their own way. Gotham Knights takes time to explore their grief, insecurities, and personal growth. Batgirl struggles to balance leadership and independence. Nightwing wrestles with responsibility and his past. Red Hood confronts his darker instincts. And Robin learns how to step out of the shadows of both Bruce and his peers. Watching them grow into their roles as Gotham’s protectors is deeply satisfying and emotionally resonant.

Final Thoughts
Gotham Knights isn’t trying to be Arkham City, and that’s a good thing. It’s its own story, focused on the next generation of Gotham’s protectors. While not perfect, with some repetitive side activities and combat pacing that won’t be for everyone — it’s still a solid, heartfelt action RPG that gives fans a reason to care about Gotham’s future.
If you love the Bat-Family, co-op action, and stories about carrying on a legacy, Gotham Knights is worth a playthrough, especially now that post-launch patches have smoothed out the rough edges.
