Paul Rudd is back as Ant-Man, and he’s brought his Ant Family in the first movie of Marvel’s phase 5, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.
The story shrinks us down to enter the Quantum Realm, which is a weird realm, but not quite as weird as I expected. There are some suitably strange characters, but the landscape appears to be mostly large mushrooms – relatively large, at least. The rules of Ant-Man’s powers seem to make even less sense and are even less consistent now. I can’t think of any scene as memorable as Thomas the Tank from the first film or Wasp running along a knife in the second.
Quantumania was not bad for thrill-ride entertainment but didn’t have much to say, other than “look out for the little guy” which is just outright stated by the characters. There doesn’t seem to be much more of a point other than to make another intro to Kang. This search for a meaning and a message might be a new concern of mine but Andor proved that Disney stories can punch a little harder.
Talking of Star Wars, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantomania has some uncanny similarities such as several “cantina” style scenes and has its’ own flat version of Kino’s speech from Andor. It’s a fun enough romp but with quite a lot of buildup.
It’s nice that the multiverse now seems to be heading somewhere, but Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania feels like several missed opportunities.
